These amazing insects are easy to identify, because of their <strong>red-brown bodies <\/strong>and <strong>massive, antler-like jaws<\/strong>&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don&#8217;t worry! While their impressive <strong>pincers <\/strong>might look scary, stag beetles are usually very <strong>docile<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>DID YOU KNOW?<\/p><p>Stag beetles have also been called billywitches, oak-ox, thunder-beetles, and horse-pinchers!  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like most beetles, stag beetles start life as <strong>larvae<\/strong>. For up to <strong>six years<\/strong> they look like <strong>white grubs<\/strong>, and make their homes in <strong>old trees <\/strong>and <strong>rotting wood<\/strong>. Hidden <strong>underground<\/strong>, the grubs grow big and strong by feeding on <strong>decaying (rotting) plant material<\/strong>. In the cocoon, it undergoes <strong>metamorphosis <\/strong>and, in the same way that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/insects\/butterfly-life-cycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caterpillar becomes a butterfly<\/a>, the larva becomes a stag beetle!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long do stag beetles live for? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After surviving all those years as a grub, adult stag beetles live for just <strong>four months<\/strong>! They emerge from their larval cocoons in <strong>late May<\/strong>, and by the <strong>end of August<\/strong>, they die. During these busy summer months, the adult beetles only eat <strong>tree sap<\/strong>, and rely on all the <strong>nutrients<\/strong> they built up as <strong>larvae <\/strong>to help them survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most important time in a stag beetle&#8217;s life, as it&#8217;s their chance to <strong>produce offspring<\/strong>! In the past, British people believed these brilliant beetles could summon storms, while in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/countries\/country-fact-file-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Germany<\/a>, stag beetles were associated with Thor, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/history\/general-history\/10-facts-about-the-vikings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">God of Thunder<\/a> \u2013\u00a0cool!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can stag beetles fly?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazingly, yes they can! On warm summer evenings, adult males can be spotted flying through the balmy air in search of mates. The beetles fly <strong>upright <\/strong>with their wings out behind them.
