As a <strong>autistic <\/strong>person, she suffered from <strong>bullying<\/strong>, while her <strong>dyslexia <\/strong>and <strong>ADHD <\/strong>made it hard for her to succeed in school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, Siena realised that our world <strong>isn&#8217;t currently designed for neurodiverse people <\/strong>like her to succeed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Siena explains &#8216;neurodiversity&#8217; as the word for natural variations in the human brain, which cause some people to think in a different way to others. Neurodiverse people are often those with autism or have other special educational needs, like Siena. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many <strong>unfair <\/strong>and <strong>unrealistic <\/strong>ideas about what being <strong>neurodiverse <\/strong>means, which Siena is determined to combat. The way she sees it, <strong>everyone&#8217;s brain works a little bit differently<\/strong>! Having a learning difference doesn&#8217;t make someone &#8216;not normal&#8217;, or mean that their brain is &#8216;worse&#8217; than anyone else&#8217;s \u2013 it&#8217;s just <strong>different<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like every other teenager, Siena is <strong>smart, fun,<\/strong> and <strong>capable<\/strong>! But she has a <strong>harder time navigating the world<\/strong> because of the way some <strong>other people <\/strong>see neurodiversity. That&#8217;s why she&#8217;s working hard to make sure the <strong>future looks brighter<\/strong> for other kids like her&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Siena is helping!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When she was <strong>13 years old<\/strong>, Siena designed and created a <strong>website <\/strong>called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qlmentoring.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Quantum Leap<\/a>, to help <strong>support and mentor<\/strong> other students with learning differences. Through the site, Siena supports <strong>up to 10 children per week<\/strong>, and offers <strong>advice and guidance <\/strong>to parents, too. To date, the site has <strong>over 1,500 subscribers<\/strong> \u2013 <em>awesome<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Siena also launched <strong>Neurodiversity Celebration Week<\/strong>, which runs from the <strong>14th-22nd March <\/strong>every year. This event draws <strong>awareness <\/strong>to neurodiversity, and encourages <strong>teachers and schools<\/strong>, in particular, to think about how they can <strong>support students with learning differences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, the event is a great time for neurodivergent people to <strong>connect<\/strong>, and feel <strong>empowered <\/strong>in the knowledge that they&#8217;re not alone! For the same reason, Siena has also written a book, <strong><em>The Spectrum Girl&#8217;s Survival Guide<\/em><\/strong>. She hopes this will help girls with autism feel <strong>supported <\/strong>and <strong>understood <\/strong>in a way she never experienced herself. <em>Wow! <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You can be a Changemaker, too!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All Siena&#8217;s hard work was fuelled by her <strong>own experiences<\/strong>, and a desire to <strong>make the world better <\/strong>for others like her. Thanks to Siena, more people <strong>understand <\/strong>what it really means to be neurodiverse. And guess what? You can become a Changemaker too, with the <em>Dirt Is Good Academy<\/em>!
