There are more than 1,300 bat species!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That makes them the <strong>second most common <\/strong>group of <strong>mammals<\/strong>, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/general-animals\/facts-about-rats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rodents<\/a>. In fact, around <strong>a fifth <\/strong>of all mammals on Earth are bats! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Many species spend their time in huge tropical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/geography\/physical-geography\/15-cool-things-about-rainforests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rainforests<\/a>, while others inhabit grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Some species weigh less than a penny, while others have a whopping 1.8m wingspan! <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the biggest bat species are part of a group known as <strong>megabats<\/strong>! These whopping bats live in the <strong>tropics<\/strong>, where they hang out in trees, snacking on <strong>fruit, nectar,<\/strong> and <strong>pollen<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>DID YOU KNOW?<\/p><p>The majority of bats are known as &#8216;<strong>microbats<\/strong>&#8216;. Scientists think this sleeping strategy allows bats to <strong>easily<\/strong> <strong>escape from predators<\/strong>, as they can drop straight into flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.  Most bats use sound to &#8216;see&#8217; the world around them<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This nifty navigation system is called <strong>echolocation<\/strong>! Bats send out <strong>waves of sound<\/strong> from their <strong>mouths<\/strong> or <strong>noses<\/strong>, which bounce off their <strong>surroundings<\/strong> right back to their <strong>ears<\/strong>. By listening to the <strong>echoes<\/strong>, bats can build up a <strong>picture<\/strong> of exactly what\u2019s around them \u2013 including juicy <strong>insects<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>WEIRD BUT TRUE! <\/p><p>Have you ever heard the phrase &#8216;blind as a bat&#8217;, to describe someone who can&#8217;t see very well? Blood-sucking &#8216;Vampire bats&#8217; are real&#8230; Eek!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">There are <strong>three species<\/strong> of blood-drinking bats, but don&#8217;t worry \u2013 they tend to prey on livestock like cattle and horses, attacks on humans are <em>very<\/em> rare!
