Earlier this year, we asked you to\u00a0write a poem inspired by a garden to celebrate the opening of Kew Gardens’ amazing new Children’s Garden! <\/strong><\/p>\n

We received hundreds of entries and our judge, Young People’s Laureate for London, poet Momtaza Mehri<\/strong>, had a tough time picking the winners. Take a look at Momtaza’s selection of young poets soon to have their work displayed at Kew…<\/p>\n

Momtaza says:\u00a0<\/em>It’s been a really expansive selection of different forms, different techniques and inventive use of imagery!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Star-prize winner<\/span><\/h1>\n

Grace, age 10\u00a0\u2014 The Tree<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

She stands guard over the garden,
\nHands poised touching the sky,
\nShe’s watched the flowers grow from a seed,
\nShe has also seen them die.<\/p>\n

She wears a dress of green ivy,
\nWith twigs stuck in her hair,
\nA bird nests on her shoulder,
\nBut she doesn’t care.<\/p>\n

For she watches over the garden,
\nAnd she is the key,
\nTo healthy and successful wildlife,
\nEven though she is only a tree.<\/p>\n

\n

Momtaza says: \u201cBrilliant use of extended metaphor<\/strong>, and it showed a knowledge of poetic techniques. Using the central figure of the tree as the backbone of the poem is really nice. The poem takes you on an emotional journey from seed to tree<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Star prize<\/span><\/h2>\n

Grace has won an all-expenses paid day out at Kew Gardens<\/strong>, where she and her family will get to explore the incredible new Children’s Garden<\/strong> where they will enter through a tunnel of scented star jasmine plants<\/strong> before arriving at a 200-year-old oak tree<\/strong>, surrounded by an aerial walkway<\/strong>! They can head over to explore four fun gardens<\/strong> themed around the elements that plants need in order to grow\u00a0\u2014 earth<\/strong>, air<\/strong>, sun<\/strong> and water<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Grace has also won an amazing bundle of Kew books and a year’s family membership to Kew, where she’ll be able to explore the gardens during all four seasons, which is host to over 50,000 living plants<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 wow! Grace’s poem will also be on display in the Children’s Garden!<\/p>\n

Runners-up!<\/span><\/h1>\n

Morgan, age 12\u00a0\u2014 The Prickly Gardener<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I snuffle around the urban forest,
\nPushing through the grassy plains,
\nSniffing out the swirly snails,
\nHunting out the bewitching beetles,
\nWhile the setting sun lulls the world to rest.<\/p>\n

The scented blooms fill my senses,
\nDistracting me with their natural beauty,
\nTowering above, and all around me,
\nFilling my thoughts with colourful images,
\nLike rainbows exploding in my dreams.<\/p>\n

A shadow passes overhead,
\nDisturbing me from my distant thoughts,
\nI take fright, my footsteps quicken,
\nWhere to go? Where to hide?
\nA place of safety soon appears.<\/p>\n

The flowerpot cavern, dark and shady,
\nA sanctuary, a shelter from my fear,
\nA chance to stop my heart from racing,
\nTo pause, in silence, while dusk approaches,
\nThe dark shielding me from the hunter above.<\/p>\n

The night continues, my time to roam,
\nGarden to garden, I seek out dinner,
\nA worm pops up, I slurp it down!
\nI continue to wonder, heading for home,
\nMy hunger now satisfied by garden creatures.<\/p>\n

I use my nose to guide me back,
\nDawn arriving with an orange glow,
\nI find my nest, my den, my bed,
\nThen curl myself into a ball of spines,
\nAnd sleep softly ’til a new dusk arrives,
\nAnother day’s work done.<\/p>\n

Hatty, age 7\u00a0– The Garden Awakes<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The sun’s heavy eyelids slip open as
\nSplinters of light come spilling out.
\nIn moments the sky is flooded with
\nThe sun’s golden rays.
\nThe dark blanket of night evaporates,
\nRevealing a garden.<\/p>\n

Vivid colours dance and swirl,
\nAs beautiful bluebell buds unfurl.
\nDazzling daffodils bow their heads,
\nTiny suns smiling in flowerbeds.<\/p>\n

Dew glistens across the grass,
\nA sea of shimmering drops
\nSparkling on the ground.
\nUp above, blossom nestles
\nIn the arms of trees’ embrace
\nUntil the breeze swoops past,
\nAnd then petals sprinkle to the floor.<\/p>\n

Purple crocuses sprout and spring
\nAs the birds of the garden sing.
\nNew life erupting everywhere,
\nThis magic garden for all to share.<\/p>\n

Enzo, age 6\u00a0\u2014 Kew Gardens<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Nature’s great,
\nbirds sing,
\nMum hates
\nbees sting!<\/p>\n

Green grass,
\nhouses glass,
\nflower bud,
\nI love mud!<\/p>\n

Outside
\nin our stride,
\nsky blue,
\ngo to Kew!<\/p>\n

Joseph, age 11\u00a0\u2014 Morning in the Garden<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Shiny drops of dew,
\nFall off shrubs and trees.
\nGrass up to my ankles,
\nFlowers up to my knees.<\/p>\n

Noise in the distant sunrise,
\nOf birds chanting their song,
\nBlue tits and woodpeckers,
\nAnd the church bell’s eerie ding dong.<\/p>\n

The tenderness of leaves,
\nThe stickiness of the sap,
\nBushes aligning the wooden fence,
\nAnd hedgehogs having a nap.<\/p>\n

The glimmer of the cobwebs,
\nThe smell of morning sun,
\nBut soon the children will come out,
\nEach to have some fun.<\/p>\n

Ethan, age 7 \u2014 In My Garden!<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

In my garden are some big plump worms
\nIn the morning, it’s what every blackbird yearns.<\/p>\n

Pulling at them, tugging them out of the ground,
\nOn the lawn and the flowerbed is where they’ll be found.<\/p>\n

\nTug tug, squawk squawk<\/p>\n

Sometimes I disturb them when I go out for a walk!<\/p>\n
