Grab your binoculars and head outside, gang, because we&#8217;re meeting some of the UK&#8217;s most popular garden birds&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">House sparrow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These <strong>noisy birds <\/strong>often visit gardens in <strong>small flocks<\/strong>. Found in <strong>towns <\/strong>and <strong>cities<\/strong>, parks and farmland, they eat <strong>buds, grains, nuts<\/strong> and <strong>scraps<\/strong>. Males (left) have <strong>black bibs <\/strong>&#8211; and the bigger the bib, the more dominant he&#8217;ll be in the flock. Often seen <strong>hopping around <\/strong>on <strong>lawns <\/strong>and <strong>foraging <\/strong>in <strong>leaf litter <\/strong>under hedges, they like to <strong>sing after it&#8217;s been raining<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re lucky, you may be visited by a <strong>small flock <\/strong>of them, known as a &#8216;<strong>charm<\/strong>&#8216;. Cute! Fancy! They would peck through the <strong>foil bottle tops <\/strong>and sneak <strong>sips <\/strong>of <strong>cream<\/strong>! During spring, they <strong>raid the nests <\/strong>of songbirds for eggs and young. Males and females are <strong>identical<\/strong>, and they <strong>sing nearly all year round<\/strong>. Despite their cute appearance, feisty robins will <strong>aggressively defend <\/strong>their <strong>territory <\/strong>from <strong>intruders<\/strong>. The female looks <strong>browner <\/strong>but once she flies off you&#8217;ll spot the <strong>yellow <\/strong>in her tail and wings. The brown birds <strong>roost together <\/strong>to <strong>conserve heat <\/strong>on cold winter nights. The record number seen in one nest box is <strong>63<\/strong>. Now, thanks to their ability to breed year-round, they&#8217;re very common.
