They could be strong, clever, sneaky, and even kind and caring! Vikings believed he was the <strong>King of the Gods<\/strong> and <strong>ruler of all things<\/strong>. According to legend, he <strong>created all of Earth and its creatures<\/strong>, including humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that&#8217;s not all. Odin was a <strong>war god<\/strong> and renowned for being a <strong>powerful magician<\/strong>. In stories, he rode into battles on a magical horse called <strong>Sleipnir<\/strong>. It had eight legs and could gallop over land and sea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Odin wasn&#8217;t only brave in battle. He sacrificed one of his eyes so that he could drink from the <strong>Fountain of Knowledge<\/strong>, which made him one of the <strong>wisest gods<\/strong>. Yikes! He&#8217;s often pictured with his two <strong>raven companions<\/strong>, <strong>Huginn <\/strong>and <strong>Muninn<\/strong>, who flew around the world gathering information for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fri<\/span>gg<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This goddess was renowned for her <strong>strength<\/strong>, <strong>cleverness<\/strong> and <strong>great beauty<\/strong>. Her name comes from a word that means &#8216;<strong>love<\/strong>&#8216; or &#8216;<strong>beloved<\/strong>&#8216;, and as Odin&#8217;s wife, she was the <strong>Queen of the Gods <\/strong>and <strong>ruling goddess of the sky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Frigg<\/strong> was an important figure for Viking women, who would worship her near <strong>bogs<\/strong> and <strong>marshlands<\/strong>. The goddess of <strong>marriage <\/strong>and <strong>motherhood<\/strong>, she had three sons \u2013&nbsp;<strong>Balder<\/strong>, <strong>H\u00f6\u00f0r<\/strong> and <strong>Hermod<\/strong>. One of Odin&#8217;s sons, he is best known as the <strong>god of thunder<\/strong>, but he also ruled over <strong>law and order<\/strong>. He was much more <strong>predictable<\/strong> than his dad, which made him easier to <strong>trust <\/strong>&#8211; so most Vikings worshipped him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vikings believed that Thor created <strong>thunder and lightning <\/strong>as he rode over the clouds &#8211; in a chariot pulled by <strong>two goats<\/strong>! He fought with a <strong>mighty hammer <\/strong>named <strong>Mj\u00f6lnir<\/strong>, and was known for his love of <strong>great feasts <\/strong>and <strong>fighting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sif<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sif<\/strong> was the <strong>goddess of the harvest<\/strong>. According to legend, she had <strong>very<\/strong> <strong>long<\/strong>, <strong>golden<\/strong> <strong>hair<\/strong> the colour of<strong> wheat<\/strong>. Sif was worshipped by <strong>Viking<\/strong> <strong>farmers<\/strong> who wanted to keep their crops healthy during the cold winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one tale, <strong>her hair was cut short <\/strong>by the trickster god, <strong>Loki<\/strong>. Her husband, <strong>Thor<\/strong>, was furious \u2013 so to make up for the crime, Loki asked the <strong>dwarves <\/strong>to make Sif a <strong>beautiful wig<\/strong>. It was made from strands of <strong>real gold<\/strong>, and grew as if it was her natural hair. Like Sif, he was worshipped by <strong>farmers<\/strong>, as the Vikings believed that he controlled the <strong>sun and rain<\/strong> &#8211; which are vital for growing crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, Frey was known for having <strong>lots of cool stuff<\/strong>! His magical ship, <strong>Skidbladnir<\/strong>, could be folded up to fit in a pocket, and he rode in a chariot pulled by a <strong>magic boar <\/strong>called <strong>Gullinbursti<\/strong>. She could use <strong>magic<\/strong>, <strong>see the future<\/strong>, and wore a <strong>cloak made of falcon feathers <\/strong>that gave her the power to <strong>fly<\/strong>! Freya also loved <strong>gold jewellery<\/strong>, <strong>music<\/strong> and <strong>poetry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she had a darker side, too. Freya fought in <strong>battles<\/strong>, riding<strong> <\/strong>in on a chariot pulled by <strong>two large cats<\/strong> to collect the souls of brave warriors who had died. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to legend, half of all fallen Viking warriors went to her realm, <strong>F\u00f3lkvangr<\/strong>, which was said to look like a <strong>beautiful meadow<\/strong>. A friendly and gentle god, he was loved and admired by all the other Viking gods and goddesses. Balder was also very <strong>handsome<\/strong> \u2013 according to Viking tales, even the flowers bowed to him as he walked past!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balder lived with his wife, <strong>Nanna<\/strong> (see above), and son <strong>Forseti<\/strong>, the <strong>god of justice<\/strong>, in a beautiful mansion in the sky. It was named <strong>Breidablik<\/strong>, and nothing evil or unclean was allowed to set foot in inside. Known as a <strong>charming <\/strong>and <strong>cunning<\/strong> <strong>trickster<\/strong>, Loki was the <strong>god of mischief <\/strong>\u2013 and he certainly lived up to this title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither good nor evil, Loki was <strong>chaotic<\/strong> and could <strong>shapeshift <\/strong>into any person or creature. He liked to <strong>play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/kids-club\/cool-kids\/general-kids-club\/april-fools-pranks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pranks<\/a> <\/strong>on his fellow gods and goddesses, and humans too, if he got the chance! But these pranks could have deadly consequences&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Loki&#8217;s most fateful pranks was when he <strong>shapeshifted into an old woman<\/strong> to trick <strong>Frigg<\/strong> into causing the death of her beloved son, Balder. Frigg wanted to protect Balder from harm, but admitted to Loki (as an old woman) that one thing could hurt him: <strong>mistletoe<\/strong>. She was said to have a gruesome appearance, with one side of her face rotten like a zombie! But the Vikings didn&#8217;t see Hel as an evil goddess. She was more often described as being <strong>mysterious<\/strong>, <strong>solemn <\/strong>and <strong>powerful<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>daughter of Loki<\/strong>, Hel ruled a cold, gloomy realm called <strong>Niflheim<\/strong>, where she looked after people who had <em>not <\/em>died in battle \u2013 those who passed from illness, age or bad luck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An<strong> important<\/strong> <strong>ruler<\/strong>, she was kept separate from her two fearsome brothers: the gigantic wolf, <strong>Fenrir<\/strong>, and <strong>J\u00f6rmungandr<\/strong>, a huge serpent who was so big that he coiled around the world.
