The <strong>thousands of artworks<\/strong> she created were each <strong>deeply connected<\/strong> to the <strong>animals<\/strong> and <strong>landscapes<\/strong> of <strong><strong>Alhalker<\/strong> Country<\/strong>, her <strong><strong>Ancestral<\/strong> homeland<\/strong>, and to her unique<strong> Anmatyerr culture<\/strong>. Read on to learn about her<strong> life<\/strong> and <strong>inspirations<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>ABOUT THE ARTIST<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Born around <strong>1914<\/strong> in <strong>Alhalker Country<\/strong>, in <strong>Australia\u2019s Northern Territory<\/strong>, Kngwarray saw many <strong>changes <\/strong>over her long lifetime. As a girl, when <strong>European colonisers took over her Ancestral lands<\/strong>, she began to work as a <strong>farmhand<\/strong> \u2013 before then <strong>she had never seen a white person<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">She started to <strong>make art in 1977<\/strong> after learning about<strong> batik<\/strong> (melted wax drawings on fabric) during <strong>educational workshops<\/strong>. By then Kngwarray was a <strong>respected elder<\/strong>, and for a <strong>decade <\/strong>she created <strong>beautiful <\/strong>and <strong>vibrant batiks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">In <strong>1987<\/strong>, she was <strong>introduced to paint<\/strong> and from then until her death in 1996, she created <strong>thousands of paintings<\/strong>! Though her <strong>techniques changed<\/strong>, all of <strong>her art<\/strong> reflected her <strong>role<\/strong> as a <strong>custodian of her homeland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilyKamKngwarray-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2260\" height=\"1502\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilyKamKngwarray-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-323431\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><br>Many of the artist\u2019s most vibrant paintings show Alhalker Country, her Ancestral homeland, with its winding waterways, textured rocks, wildflowers, grasses and shifting light. Some seem to show a bird\u2019s eye view of the land, or map out the paths of wildlife.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><br>SAND DRAWING &amp; BODY PAINTING<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilyKamKngwarray-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2304\" height=\"1296\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilyKamKngwarray-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-323436\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Although Kngwarray didn\u2019t put <strong>paint onto canvas<\/strong> until she was around<strong> 75 years old<\/strong>, <strong>expressive mark making <\/strong>had always been part of <strong>her culture<\/strong>. Her people use <strong>sand drawing to tell their stories<\/strong>. And during<strong> awely<\/strong> (ceremonies), the women <strong>paint each other\u2019s bodies<\/strong>. Lots of <strong>her art <\/strong>shows these <strong>same body painting designs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilyKamKngwarray-3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1532\" height=\"1008\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilyKamKngwarray-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-323430\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The name <strong>\u2018Kam\u2019<\/strong> was given to the artist by her <strong>grandfather<\/strong> and <strong>translates as \u2018pencil yam seed pod\u2019<\/strong>. She identified <strong>strongly<\/strong> with her namesake \u2013 it was her <strong>story<\/strong>, or <strong>\u2018Dreaming\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 and she frequently <strong>painted the crisscrossing anwerlarr (pencil yam) vines <\/strong>that <strong>grow all over Alhalker<\/strong>, as well as their <strong>winding roots and fingerlike tubers<\/strong> (see below). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilKamKngwarray-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2344\" height=\"1546\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EmilKamKngwarray-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-323428\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Many of her<strong> expressive canvases <\/strong>are filled with<strong> colourful dots <\/strong>that show <strong>yam seeds<\/strong>.
