1.<\/strong>\u00a0World War 2\u00a0<\/strong>was a battle between two groups of countries <\/span><\/h3>\n

– the ‘Allies<\/strong>‘ and the ‘Axis<\/strong>‘. The major Allied Powers were Britain, France<\/a>, Russia<\/a>, China<\/a> and the United States<\/a>. The major Axis Powers were Germany<\/a>, Italy<\/a> and Japan<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

2.<\/strong>\u00a0Before World War 2 began, Germany was ruled by a man named Adolf Hitler<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Together with the\u00a0Nazi Party<\/strong>, he wanted Germany to rule Europe. To gain more land and power, on 1 September 1939<\/strong> German troops invaded Poland<\/strong>. After Hitler refused to stop the invasion, Britain and France declared war on Germany – World War II had begun.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> During the course of the war, German forces advanced through Europe<\/span><\/h3>\n

By the summer of 1941<\/strong> they had invaded France<\/strong>, Belgium<\/strong>, Holland<\/strong>, Luxembourg<\/strong>, Denmark<\/strong>, Norway<\/strong>, Greece<\/strong>, Yugoslavia<\/strong>* and the USSR<\/strong>*.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/strong>\u00a0Millions of Germans were imprisoned and killed because they didn’t fit the image of the ‘perfect’ German<\/span><\/h3>\n

Hitler wanted to create what he thought was the ‘best’ and strongest race – and to the Nazi Party, this excluded certain groups, such as Jews<\/strong>, Roma <\/strong>and Sinti peoples<\/strong>, members of the LGBTQIA+ community<\/strong>\u00a0and those with physical<\/strong> and mental disabilities<\/strong>. In an attempt to eliminate a ‘racial enemy’ outside of Germany, such groups were also persecuted in the countries invaded by German forces.<\/span><\/p>\n

5.<\/strong>\u00a0The group most heavily targeted by the Nazis were the Jews<\/span><\/h3>\n

Around six million<\/strong> Jewish people were killed during World War 2 in one of history\u2019s most terrible events – the Holocaust.<\/strong> Racist in his views, Hitler blamed Jewish people for Germany losing World War I<\/strong><\/a> and claimed they were dangerous to German people and society.<\/span><\/p>\n

6.<\/strong>\u00a0Around the same time that Germany fought for power in Europe, Japan wanted to control Asia and the Pacific<\/span><\/h3>\n

In 1937<\/strong> (before World War 2 had officially begun) under Emperor Hirohito<\/strong>, Japan attacked China, bringing the two nations into years of conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

7.<\/strong>\u00a0The US didn’t join the war until 1941, when Japan attacked the United States <\/span><\/h3>\n

– at their Naval Base at Pearl Harbor<\/strong> in Hawaii<\/strong>. On 8 December 1941<\/strong> (the very next day), the US declared War on Japan and, in turn, its German allies.<\/span><\/p>\n

8.<\/strong>\u00a0Some countries remained ‘neutral’ in World War 2<\/span><\/h3>\n

Such countries were Spain<\/strong>, Sweden<\/strong> and Switzerland<\/strong> – who\u00a0<\/span>chose not to join either side.<\/p>\n

9.<\/strong>\u00a0The Germans surrendered on\u00a0<\/span>8 May 1945<\/h3>\n

In 1944, an Allied army crossed from Britain to free France from Nazi rule. One year later, Allied armies invaded Germany, forcing the Germans to surrender. After\u00a0nuclear<\/strong> attacks on Japan’s major cities Hiroshima<\/strong> and Nagasaki<\/strong>, Japan also surrendered to Allied forces in August the same year. World War 2 had ended.<\/p>\n

10.<\/strong>\u00a0Around 64 million people<\/strong> died in World War 2<\/span><\/h3>\n

– that’s more than the entire<\/em> population of the United Kingdom.<\/span>
