{"id":6829,"date":"2017-06-06T12:51:41","date_gmt":"2017-06-06T12:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/natgeokids.com\/uk\/?p=6829"},"modified":"2018-11-07T13:00:25","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T13:00:25","slug":"feathered-dinosaur-tail-amber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/discover\/animals\/prehistoric-animals\/feathered-dinosaur-tail-amber\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists discover feathered dinosaur tail in amber!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/First-feathered-dinosaur-tail-found-preserved-in-amber-1.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6830\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/First-feathered-dinosaur-tail-found-preserved-in-amber-1.gif\" alt=\"First feathered dinosaur tail found preserved in amber\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/First-feathered-dinosaur-tail-found-preserved-in-amber-featured.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The one-of-a-kind find is helping <strong>scientists<\/strong> to figure out more about the <strong>extinct<\/strong> creatures that roamed the Earth for more than <strong>160 million years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The amber specimen is <strong>99 million years old<\/strong> and was discovered by a scientist on sale at an amber market in <strong>Myanmar<\/strong> in <strong>South East Asia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The amber had been polished to be made into jewellery, as its seller had thought it was plant material trapped inside.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it turned out to be the feathered tail of a <strong>sparrow-sized dinosaur<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/First-feathered-dinosaur-tail-found-preserved-in-amber-2.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6831\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/First-feathered-dinosaur-tail-found-preserved-in-amber-2.gif\" alt=\"First feathered dinosaur tail found preserved in amber\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"details\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Experts determined that the feathery find belonged to dinosaur and not an <strong>ancient bird<\/strong> as the bones inside it were not fused together, like they are in today&#8217;s birds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s likely that the ancient creature met a sticky end when his tail got caught in the <strong>resin<\/strong> that later formed the amber.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although this spelled bad news for the little fellow, it\u2019s good news for scientists, who have previously only been able to see dino feathers as<strong>\u00a0fossils<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 not the 3D view that this amber specimen offers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tail, which is<strong> chestnut brown<\/strong> on top and <strong>white<\/strong> on its underside, is such a small sample, scientists haven&#8217;t yet been able to tell whether the dinky dino used his feathers for <strong>flying<\/strong> or <strong>gliding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Roar<\/em>some!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"details\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">What do you make to this feathery discovery?
