{"id":879,"date":"2016-11-25T11:50:53","date_gmt":"2016-11-25T11:50:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/natgeokids.com?p=879"},"modified":"2017-03-03T20:17:29","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T20:17:29","slug":"junior-travel-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/uk\/kids-club\/cool-kids\/general-kids-club\/junior-travel-blog\/","title":{"rendered":"NG KiDS&#8217; Junior Adventures Blog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine living your life on the road, <strong>exploring<\/strong> the world one <strong>country<\/strong> at a time&#8230; That\u2019s exactly what our NG KiDS\u2019 junior bloggers, <strong>Pepeijn<\/strong> and <strong>Romeq<\/strong>, are doing right now. <strong>Globetrotting<\/strong> in their family\u2019s motorhome, each day holds a new <strong>adventure<\/strong>, and <strong>every month<\/strong> they\u2019ll be telling us about all the amazing things they\u2019ve been up to!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/1865035978.rsc.cdn77.org\/dynamic\/features_content\/00000011\/11073\/23228354e8574116bef45fc3bfe6e0a2c99c4ba3_1476802341.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>___________________________________________<\/h2>\n<h2>Penguin pals on Boulders Beach!<\/h2>\n<h5>22 December 2016<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In Pepeijn and Romeq&#8217;s latest blog, they take us on a special swim alongside African penguins!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our latest adventure was to\u00a0<strong>Boulders Beach<\/strong>\u00a0near\u00a0<strong>Cape of Good Hope<\/strong>\u00a0in South Africa, which is home to a HUGE\u00a0<strong>African penguin<\/strong>\u00a0breeding colony \u2014 the biggest of the whole continent.<\/p>\n<p>The beach is covered with beautiful ancient granite boulders \u2014 and of course, penguins!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-2-boulders-beach.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5192 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-2-boulders-beach.gif\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><em>These huge boulders give the beach its name!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The African Penguin is also known as the \u201cJackass Penguin\u201d because of the braying sounds it makes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boulders Beach<\/strong>\u00a0is a very popular place among locals and tourists, because you can swim and\u00a0<strong>snorkel<\/strong>\u00a0very close to the penguins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-3-penguins.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5193 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-3-penguins.gif\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><em>African penguins make a &#8216;braying&#8217; sound, like a donkey!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The penguins are very curious and won\u2019t bite you, as long you don\u2019t harass or scare them!<\/p>\n<p>They can grow to about 60cm tall and eat mostly\u00a0<strong>sardines<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>squid<\/strong>, which they hunt for in groups. They do their hunting around two miles out to sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-4-penguins.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5194 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-4-penguins.gif\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><em>African penguins swim out to sea to hunt in groups<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After they have laid their eggs, both the male and the female penguins\u00a0<strong>incubate<\/strong>\u00a0and take care of them, until they hatch at about 40 days.<\/p>\n<p>As penguins are very clever and creative, they place their eggs behind an\u00a0<strong>egg-shaped shell<\/strong>\u00a0to confuse\u00a0<strong>seagulls<\/strong>. Hungry seagulls will then steal the shell instead of the actual egg. Smart, right?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-5-penguins.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5195 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-5-penguins.gif\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><em>The clever penguins use shells to trick predators and protect their eggs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Baby penguins are so cute to look at. They look like a brown, woolly ball. When they get older, their fluffy coats change colour \u2014 into white and black feathers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-6-penguins.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5196 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-6-penguins.gif\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a><em>Baby penguins look fluffy!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Did you know that penguins are monogamous? This means that they will stay together as a pair no matter what happens.<\/p>\n<p>Till next time!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Pepeijn and Romeq<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>___________________________________________<\/h2>\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">A whale of a time!<\/span><\/h2>\n<h5>4 November 2016<\/h5>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"s1\">In\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Pepeijn and Romeq&#8217;s latest blog, we meet a giant of the sea &#8211; the Southern Right whale!\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Pepeijn and I recently went on a spectacular <strong>whale watching tour<\/strong> in <strong>South Africa<\/strong>! We saw 19 <strong>Southern Right whales<\/strong> &#8211; one even swam right underneath our boat!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A Southern Right can grow up to <strong>16.5m long<\/strong> and weigh up to <strong>60 tonnes<\/strong> &#8211; that is four times the weight of our camper truck, <em>woah<\/em>! Funny enough though, they only eat plankton and krill, which are tiny.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-7-whales.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5197 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-7-whales.jpg\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-7-whales.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-7-whales-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><em>A Southern Right pops up to say hello!<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">See the rough, <strong>white patches<\/strong> on these gentle giants\u2019 heads? Turns out they\u2019re not shells, but \u201c<strong>callosities<\/strong>\u201d, a <strong>horn-like material<\/strong> that forms on their head and jawline. These patches give every whale its own unique pattern (like a human fingerprint) which makes them easy to recognise!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Did you know that when whales dive, they leave behind a \u2018<strong>footprint<\/strong>? This large circular patch of water is made by the thrust of their <strong>tail<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 it\u2019s impressive to see!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-8-.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5198 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-8-.jpg\" alt=\"Junior Travel Blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-8-.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-8--300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><em>Ready to spot some whales!<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Southern Right whales swim to the warm South African waters to give birth. When a baby (called a <strong>calf<\/strong>) is born late in the season, it doesn\u2019t have enough body fat to survive the long journey back to their icy\u00a0<strong>feeding grounds<\/strong> in <strong>Antarctica<\/strong>. So, mum will take her newborn on a snack pit-stop first! They swim to <strong>Namibia<\/strong> where the calf fills up on <strong>krill<\/strong> &#8211; gaining about <strong>65kg<\/strong>\u00a0of weight per day \u2013 for several weeks before they make their long journey back home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Funny fact:<\/strong> It seems Pepeijn and I are not the only ones on a world tour&#8230; <strong>Scientists<\/strong> in <strong>South Africa<\/strong> and <strong>Argentina<\/strong> are currently studying the whale\u2019s callosities to determine if they swim around the entire globe!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5206 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog.jpg\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Farewell until our next adventure!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><strong>Pepeijn and Romeq<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>____________________________________________<\/h2>\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">Twinkle, twinkle, little stars!<\/span><\/h2>\n<h5>30 September 2016<\/h5>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span class=\"s1\">In\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Pepeijn and Romeq&#8217;s latest blog, they take us on a deep, dark trip into the\u00a0<\/span>Kalahari Desert<span class=\"s1\">!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Stargazing<\/strong> and sleeping under the <strong>African<\/strong> stars has long been on our bucket list so when my mum told us that we were driving up to <strong><span class=\"s1\">Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch <\/span><\/strong>in the<strong> Kalahari Desert<\/strong>, <strong>Namibia<\/strong>, we jumped for joy! This lodge <span class=\"s2\">owns a cool, computerized <strong>telescope<\/strong><\/span> with tracking software, so it can hone in on galactic objects in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9-.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5199 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9-.jpg\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9-.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9--300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><em>&#8220;Hey, give me a turn!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Did you know that the Kalahari Desert is not a true desert<\/span> like the <strong>Sahara<\/strong> but in fact a <strong>fossil desert<\/strong> where it often rains like cat and dogs? This makes it home to a great variety of greenery and wildlife from <strong>scorpions<\/strong>, <strong>snakes<\/strong>, <strong>zebra<\/strong>, <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/animals\/ten-giraffe-facts\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>giraffe<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>oryx<\/strong> and <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/animals\/meerkat-facts\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>meerkats<\/strong><\/a> to predators like the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/..\/..\/animals\/cheetah-facts\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>cheetah<\/strong><\/a>. <span class=\"s2\">We spotted loads of awesome <\/span>animal tracks which made our upcoming survival trip even more exciting!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9-meerkats.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5200 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9-meerkats.jpg\" alt=\"junior adventures blog\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9-meerkats.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/02\/junior-adventures-blog-9-meerkats-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><em>Pepeijn &amp; Romeq came across these cheeky characters in the desert!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Ivan<\/strong>, a very friendly <strong>Bushman<\/strong> who seems to know\u00a0<em>everything<\/em> about space, showed us t<\/span>he <strong>Milky Way<\/strong> stretching overhead,<span class=\"s2\">\u00a0t<\/span>he rings of <strong>Saturn<\/strong>, the moons of <strong>Jupiter<\/strong>, and the <strong>Southern Cross<\/strong>. We also spotted the <strong>Jewel Box<\/strong> \u2013 to the naked eye this looks like a single star but it\u2019s actually an orange <strong>supergiant<\/strong> (one of the largest types of stars) surrounded by smaller, blue stars. Sure we have less space, but we have the whole world to play in. Currently we are in <strong>Namibia<\/strong>, <strong>Southwest Africa<\/strong>. I suppose you may call us modern nomads\u2026 We love this lifestyle!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My school books, tests and exams are the same as yours, only my mum is my teacher, and my dad sends my work to teachers back home via the internet. So far, we\u2019ve had good results &#8211; phew!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our favourite part of our schooling are the hands-on field trips we get to do.
