Penguin pals on Boulders Beach!<\/h2>\n

In Pepeijn and Romeq’s latest blog, they take us on a special swim alongside African penguins!<\/em><\/p>\n

Our latest adventure was to\u00a0Boulders Beach<\/strong>\u00a0near\u00a0Cape of Good Hope<\/strong>\u00a0in South Africa, which is home to a HUGE\u00a0African penguin<\/strong>\u00a0breeding colony \u2014 the biggest of the whole continent.<\/p>\n

The beach is covered with beautiful ancient granite boulders \u2014 and of course, penguins!<\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>These huge boulders give the beach its name!<\/em><\/p>\n

The African Penguin is also known as the \u201cJackass Penguin\u201d because of the braying sounds it makes.<\/p>\n

Boulders Beach<\/strong>\u00a0is a very popular place among locals and tourists, because you can swim and\u00a0snorkel<\/strong>\u00a0very close to the penguins.<\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>African penguins make a ‘braying’ sound, like a donkey!<\/em><\/p>\n

The penguins are very curious and won\u2019t bite you, as long you don\u2019t harass or scare them!<\/p>\n

They can grow to about 60cm tall and eat mostly\u00a0sardines<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0squid<\/strong>, which they hunt for in groups. They do their hunting around two miles out to sea.<\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>African penguins swim out to sea to hunt in groups<\/em><\/p>\n

After they have laid their eggs, both the male and the female penguins\u00a0incubate<\/strong>\u00a0and take care of them, until they hatch at about 40 days.<\/p>\n

As penguins are very clever and creative, they place their eggs behind an\u00a0egg-shaped shell<\/strong>\u00a0to confuse\u00a0seagulls<\/strong>. Hungry seagulls will then steal the shell instead of the actual egg. Smart, right?<\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>The clever penguins use shells to trick predators and protect their eggs.<\/em><\/p>\n

Baby penguins are so cute to look at. They look like a brown, woolly ball. When they get older, their fluffy coats change colour \u2014 into white and black feathers.<\/p>\n

Did you know that penguins are monogamous? This means that they will stay together as a pair no matter what happens.<\/p>\n

A whale of a time!<\/span><\/h2>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>Pepeijn and Romeq’s latest blog, we meet a giant of the sea – the Southern Right whale!\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Pepeijn and I recently went on a spectacular whale watching tour<\/strong> in South Africa<\/strong>! We saw 19 Southern Right whales<\/strong> – one even swam right underneath our boat!<\/p>\n

A Southern Right can grow up to 16.5m long<\/strong> and weigh up to 60 tonnes<\/strong> – that is four times the weight of our camper truck, woah<\/em>! Funny enough though, they only eat plankton and krill, which are tiny.<\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>A Southern Right pops up to say hello!<\/em><\/p>\n

See the rough, white patches<\/strong> on these gentle giants\u2019 heads? Turns out they\u2019re not shells, but \u201ccallosities<\/strong>\u201d, a horn-like material<\/strong> that forms on their head and jawline. These patches give every whale its own unique pattern (like a human fingerprint) which makes them easy to recognise!<\/p>\n

Did you know that when whales dive, they leave behind a \u2018footprint<\/strong>? This large circular patch of water is made by the thrust of their tail<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 it\u2019s impressive to see!<\/p>\n

\"Junior<\/a>Ready to spot some whales!<\/em><\/p>\n

Southern Right whales swim to the warm South African waters to give birth. When a baby (called a calf<\/strong>) is born late in the season, it doesn\u2019t have enough body fat to survive the long journey back to their icy\u00a0feeding grounds<\/strong> in Antarctica<\/strong>. So, mum will take her newborn on a snack pit-stop first! They swim to Namibia<\/strong> where the calf fills up on krill<\/strong> – gaining about 65kg<\/strong>\u00a0of weight per day \u2013 for several weeks before they make their long journey back home.<\/p>\n

Funny fact:<\/strong> It seems Pepeijn and I are not the only ones on a world tour… Scientists<\/strong> in South Africa<\/strong> and Argentina<\/strong> are currently studying the whale\u2019s callosities to determine if they swim around the entire globe!<\/p>\n

Twinkle, twinkle, little stars!<\/span><\/h2>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>Pepeijn and Romeq’s latest blog, they take us on a deep, dark trip into the\u00a0<\/span>Kalahari Desert!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Stargazing<\/strong> and sleeping under the African<\/strong> stars has long been on our bucket list so when my mum told us that we were driving up to Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch <\/span><\/strong>in the Kalahari Desert<\/strong>, Namibia<\/strong>, we jumped for joy! This lodge owns a cool, computerized telescope<\/strong><\/span> with tracking software, so it can hone in on galactic objects in the night sky.<\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>“Hey, give me a turn!”<\/em><\/p>\n

Did you know that the Kalahari Desert is not a true desert<\/span> like the Sahara<\/strong> but in fact a fossil desert<\/strong> where it often rains like cat and dogs? This makes it home to a great variety of greenery and wildlife from scorpions<\/strong>, snakes<\/strong>, zebra<\/strong>, giraffe<\/strong><\/a>, oryx<\/strong> and meerkats<\/strong><\/a> to predators like the cheetah<\/strong><\/a>. We spotted loads of awesome <\/span>animal tracks which made our upcoming survival trip even more exciting!<\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>Pepeijn & Romeq came across these cheeky characters in the desert!<\/em><\/p>\n

Ivan<\/strong>, a very friendly Bushman<\/strong> who seems to know\u00a0everything<\/em> about space, showed us t<\/span>he Milky Way<\/strong> stretching overhead,\u00a0t<\/span>he rings of Saturn<\/strong>, the moons of Jupiter<\/strong>, and the Southern Cross<\/strong>. We also spotted the Jewel Box<\/strong> \u2013 to the naked eye this looks like a single star but it\u2019s actually an orange supergiant<\/strong> (one of the largest types of stars) surrounded by smaller, blue stars. It was an incredible experience!<\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>Pepeijn and Romeq’s first blog, we learn about the boys\u2019 awesome African adventures!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Hey NG KiDS<\/strong>, welcome to our Junior Travellers Blog<\/strong>! My brother Pepeijn<\/strong>, (14) and me, Romeq<\/strong>, (12) have been travelling the world in an off-road truck for over 500<\/strong> days now!\u00a0<\/span>Of course, we\u2019re not on our own, but with our parents, Nelke<\/strong> and Frans<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"junior<\/a>Pepeijn and Romeq’s home is wheelie cool!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

We have everything we need on board our truck which is a little bit like your house – only on big wheels! Sure we have less space, but we have the whole world to play in. Currently we are in Namibia<\/strong>, Southwest Africa<\/strong>. I suppose you may call us modern nomads\u2026 We love this lifestyle!<\/span><\/p>\n

My school books, tests and exams are the same as yours, only my mum is my teacher, and my dad sends my work to teachers back home via the internet. So far, we\u2019ve had good results – phew!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our favourite part of our schooling are the hands-on field trips we get to do. We have spent time with the Himba<\/strong> and the Damara tribes<\/strong>, seen lions<\/strong> up close in Etosha National Park<\/strong>, been on an African drum course<\/strong> in the slums\u00a0and touched a cheetah<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Junior<\/a>Pepeijn and Romeq’s school trips are pretty hands-on!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Constantly being on the move means we\u2019re always prepared for the unexpected – we carry a camera<\/strong>, binoculars<\/strong>, a survival knife<\/strong> and pepper spray<\/strong> at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are now in the capital of Namibia<\/strong>. Do you know the name of it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
