He immediately set about marrying his elder brother\u2019s widow, <strong>Catherine of Aragon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What was Henry VIII like?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9981\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9981\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9981 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-4.jpg\" alt=\"Henry VIII facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-4.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-4-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry hired some of Europe&#8217;s finest craftsmen and gardeners to transform Hampton Court into a sumptuous palace.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The young King Henry\u00a0was said to be handsome, clever and fun in contrast to his boring father. He was over six feet tall and loved <strong>jousting<\/strong>, <strong>hunting<\/strong>, <strong>composing<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>music<\/strong> and throwing big, expensive parties!<\/p>\n<p>He loved spending money. The <strong>Tudor<\/strong> era was a time of great change, new ideas were emerging about science, art, design and culture, and great sailing expeditions uncovered new lands. Henry wanted to show off all his wealth and built many magnificent palaces \u2014\u00a0like Hampton Court Palace \u2014\u00a0and castles that would impress his subjects and rivals.<\/p>\n<p>But, in his later years, all that indulgence took its toll on his physical health. The older King Henry was hugely\u00a0overweight and struggled to walk. At the age of <strong>50<\/strong> he had a <strong>54-inch<\/strong> (137cm) waist! He also suffered from a gruesome ulcer on his leg that caused him constant pain \u2014\u00a0which may have\u00a0explained his bad temper!<\/p>\n<p>Henry is known for being\u00a0a ruthless King who ruled with an iron fist. Strong-willed and bullish, he handed out <strong>executions<\/strong> to anyone\u00a0who\u00a0stood in his way. Wolsey\u00a0(dressed in red robes), was unsuccessful and later arrested for treason.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the biggest changes that Henry brought about during his reign was the <strong>English Reformation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After 24 years of marriage, his first wife, Catherine, had failed to give Henry\u00a0a male heir.\u00a0Frustrated, he\u00a0went to the <strong>Pope<\/strong> to ask for a divorce, but the Pope wouldn\u2019t allow it.<\/p>\n<p>Unhappy, Henry\u00a0took matters into his own hands. He broke away from the <strong>Catholic\u00a0Church<\/strong>, creating his own <strong>Church of England <\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>naming himself the head. He\u00a0appointed his friend\u00a0Thomas Cranmer as<strong> Archbishop of Canterbury<\/strong>, and made him\u00a0grant a divorce \u2014 <em>easy<\/em>! Thus ended the first (there were to be many more!) of Henry\u2019s marriages.<\/p>\n<p>The religious reform caused widespread divide in <strong>England<\/strong>,\u00a0with many people disliking the new church. Followers of the new church were known as <strong>protestants<\/strong>, whereas worshippers of the Roman Catholic\u00a0Church were called <strong>Catholics<\/strong>. There was often tension and clashes between the two groups \u2014 an unrest that would last for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Henry&#8217;s actions were revolutionary because they changed the identity of English religion. The royal couple\u00a0were thrilled when their first-born son,\u00a0<strong>Henry<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>was born in\u00a0<strong>1511.<\/strong>\u00a0A\u00a0lavish party was thrown,\u00a0but sadly he only lived until he was seven\u00a0weeks old.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Mary<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9989\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-12.jpg\" alt=\"Henry VIII facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-12.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-12-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The only surviving child from Henry and Catherine of Aragon&#8217;s marriage was a daughter &#8211; born in <strong>1516<\/strong> &#8211; who they named\u00a0<strong>Mary<\/strong>. Once\u00a0Catherine was no longer Queen, she was forbidden from seeing or communicating with her daughter, although they sent each other\u00a0secret letters until Catherine&#8217;s death. Mary later went on to become <strong>Mary I<\/strong>, the first Queen of England and Ireland (ruling in her own right).<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Elizabeth<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9988\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-11.jpg\" alt=\"Henry VIII facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-11.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-11-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Henry&#8217;s next\u00a0child, born during his marriage to <strong>Anne Boleyn<\/strong>, was a baby girl, <strong>Elizabeth<\/strong>, whom they named after Henry&#8217;s\u00a0mother. Elizabeth was a\u00a0healthy baby\u00a0but after Henry had\u00a0Anne executed\u00a0(awkward!), he\u00a0had little to do with Elizabeth&#8217;s upbringing.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Edward<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9986\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-9.jpg\" alt=\"Henry VIII facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-9.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-9-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In <strong>1537<\/strong>, Henry&#8217;s dream of a son finally came true when his third wife, <strong>Jane Seymour<\/strong>, gave birth to\u00a0<strong>Prince Edward<\/strong>. The\u00a0celebrations didn&#8217;t last long however, as less than\u00a0two weeks later, the Queen died due to complications from the birth.<\/p>\n<p>No children came from his next three marriages.<\/p>\n<h2>Who succeeded Henry VIII?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9987\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9987 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.natgeokids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-10.jpg\" alt=\"Henry VIII facts\" width=\"635\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-10.jpg 635w, https:\/\/cdn.creatureandcoagency.com\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Henry-VIII-facts-10-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King Henry with his son Edward and third wife, Jane Seymour.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Henry died in <strong>1547<\/strong> at the age of <strong>55<\/strong>, obese and riddled with health issues.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>He was buried in <strong>St. George&#8217;s Chapel<\/strong> in <strong>Windsor Castle<\/strong> next to his third wife and mother to his only surviving son, <strong>Jane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Upon his death, the son that Henry had so desperately wanted inherited the throne as <strong>Edward VI<\/strong>.
