How to make a bug hotel

A bowl of dried leaves and twigs, a plastic bottle, yellow glue, brown paper, scissors, and a yellow sheet of paper are arranged on a white surface—perfect supplies for learning how to make a bug hotel at home.

What you’ll need…

Empty plastic juice bottle
Foam sheets
Old pair of tights
Rocks, grass, leaves, twigs
Scissors
Glue
Sticky tape

Step 1

A person demonstrates how to make a bug hotel by cutting a large clear plastic bottle with purple scissors, holding it steady on a yellow surface.

First, wash and dry the empty juice bottle and remove the label. The, ask an adult to help you cut out a rectangle shape from one of the sides.

Step 2

A person demonstrates how to make a bug hotel by placing green leaves inside a clear plastic bottle with dried leaves and small rocks, possibly for a craft or science project, on a yellow surface.

Carefully place your natural materials into the bottle. Start with the rocks and then use the twigs, grass and leaves to make a home t for a bug-king!

Step 3

Two-panel image showing how to make a bug hotel: on the left, hands cut brown tissue paper with scissors; on the right, they attach the paper to a plastic bottle containing leaves. Both actions take place on a yellow surface.

Next, carefully cut a piece from the tights big enough to cover the square hole, then stick it to the bottle with the tape.

Step 4

A person uses purple scissors to cut a rectangular shape out of yellow foam material on a yellow surface, a creative step in learning how to make a bug hotel.

Take the foam and cut out a rectangle slightly bigger than the hole in the bottle. Cut another rectangle about 2cm inside the first, creating a frame shape.

Step 5

A person demonstrates how to make a bug hotel by applying glue to a yellow rectangular frame, then placing it with a cut-out window onto a clear plastic container filled with leaves.

Now, glue the foam over the tights, take the lid off the bottle and place it in long grass. Then wait for the bugs to check in!

A clear plastic bottle with a yellow lid is lying on its side, containing dried leaves and twigs inside—like a simple guide for how to make a bug hotel. The bottle’s cap is removed, revealing the contents through the transparent surface.

Top tip: Check your bug hotel each day and make a note of any new arrivals!
