THE YOUNG WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION
Are you a budding photographer who loves all things wild?
Love venturing outdoors? Got an eagle-eye for nature? Then this is the competition for you!
The Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is one of the world’s top wildlife photography contests, celebrating remarkable photos that capture our wonderful wild world.
Kids can take part, too, competing to become the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year! Your images can cover any aspect of nature – from teeny ants and terrific trees to unusual habitats and urban animals. The competition is free to enter and you don’t need hi-tech camera equipment to take part. One of this year’s category winning picture was taken on a smartphone!
Could YOU be crowned the 2027 Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year?!
Meet a winner!
10 year old Amelie Davis won the ‘Ten Years and Under’ category in the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition with this show-stopping shot of a bee.
We had a quick chat with her…

Hi Amelie! Congratulations on your win! What made you enter the competition?
I’ve been fascinated by animals and insects for as long as I can remember. Then I saw last year’s winner interviewed in National Geographic Kids magazine and was inspired to enter. It feels incredible to have won the 10 Years and Under category!
What’s your favourite animal to photograph?
I love photographing bees. I find their colours, stripes and furry bodies fascinating.
Just look at her un-bee-liveably awesome winning photograph!

Is there another creature you’d love to photograph?
Wild golden eagles are on my bucket list. I’d love to go to Scotland and photograph one soaring through the sky in its natural habitat!
That would be amazing. What do you think makes a great wildlife photo?
I think it should make you feel something. It might capture a really special or fleeting moment, show an animal in a way you haven’t seen before, or tell a story about the natural world.
What are some things you need to become a great wildlife photographer?
Be curious about the animals you want to photograph. Persevere and be patient – it will pay off. And know your camera! Learn how your camera or phone works and you’re much more likely to achieve the photo you want when the perfect moment happens.
What’s your top tip for kids looking to get into wildlife photography and enter this year’s competition?
You don’t have to go far to find a great subject. Look in your garden or a local park and just start taking photos, whether that’s on a camera or a phone. If you capture a special moment that makes you think ‘wow’, enter it! You never know what might happen…
Amazing tips, thanks Amelie!
