Cookies Policy

This page contains two copies of our Cookies Policy – one for kids, and one for grown-ups! Keep on reading for the kids’ version, or click here to jump to the grown-ups’ version.

Kids!

We’re sorry to report there are no tasty snacks here – this policy is all about internet cookies. These much-less-exciting cookies are small information files that we send to the device you’re reading this on. They help make our websites work better and provide information to the owners of the site (that’s us!).

There are some that we need to use in order to make our website work, and some that you will have the option to turn on. You can ask a parent or guardian to help you turn cookies on or off using our Complianz cookie consent tool.

That’s all you need to know about cookies, but if you want to find out more, read on!

So what are these inedible internet cookies?

Like we said, internet cookies are small files placed on your browser (e.g. Safari or Google Chrome) that help our website work.

There are additional cookies that you have the option to switch on, that help us recognise you when you return to our website and can tell us whether you’ve visited before. This helps us tailor your experience on our websites, so that you have the best possible time! We also use it to assess how the website is being used, so that we can improve it.

How can I control what cookies you set?

Firstly, you’ll need to check with a parent about accepting our cookies – make sure you call them over to help you. We have a quick and easy tool that allows you to choose which cookies are on and which are off. Just click the ‘Cookie Consent’ button in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen when using our website, and it’ll let you choose whether or not to accept cookies!

Please note, that opting out of all cookies might prevent areas of the website working as they should. You can find out more information about specific cookies, in the Grown-Ups’ section of this policy.

What types of cookies do we use?

We use three different types of cookies on our website. These are:

  • Functional cookies, which are required to make the website work!
  • Statistics cookies, which help us see how people (who remain anonymous – so we don’t know who you are) are using our website. These cookies help us improve the website’s performance – they make sure that you easily search for things, and speed up those searches.
  • Marketing cookies, which record information about links that you have followed from our website and pages you have visited. This allows us to target other information, like advertising, towards your interests.

You can read more about each individual cookie that we use, in the Grown-Ups’ policy (there are 20 of them, and the jobs each one does get a bit complicated!).

If you visit another website via a link on ours, that website might use its own cookies on your device too. We don’t control these websites and are not responsible for their cookies.

What if I don’t like the cookies, or what this policy has to say?

Without the use of ‘functional’ cookies, it will be difficult for you to use our website. You can find out more about how we deal with your data on our Privacy Policy page.

There, you can also find out how to get in contact with us about any issues or questions that you might have. We really want you to have a safe and fun experience online, and will do our best to support you and your use of our website.

What are cookies?

When you visit our website (www.natgeokids.com) we may send your browser a cookie. A cookie is a small file placed on your computer or mobile phone’s browser that helps us understand how the website is used by visitors, such as recognising you when you return to our website and can tell us whether or not you’ve visited the site before. Your browser will tell us if you have these cookies, and if you don’t, we may generate new ones. Cookies contain information that is transferred to your computer’s hard drive.

The information we collect allows us to better tailor our web experience to the interests of our visitors. This information may be used in aggregate form by Creature Media to assess general user interest in our site and the content on it. Personal data is pseudonymised in this type of reporting.

How to disable cookies

Our GDPR-compliant cookie consent tool by Complianz allows you to easily enable or disable our cookies without having to alter your browser settings – just click the ‘Cookie Consent’ button in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen when using our website. You can find out more about the tool, here: complianz.io. Alternatively, you can set your browser to refuse all or some browser cookies or to alert you when a website sets or uses cookies. You can disable cookies from our site at any time – all modern browsers allow you to change your cookies settings, and these settings will typically be found in the ‘options’ or ‘preferences’ menu of your browser. Please note, this may prevent areas of a website from working as intended.

To find out more about cookies, including how to see what cookies have been placed on our website and how to manage and delete them, visit www.aboutcookies.org or www.allaboutcookies.org.
