Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz.
Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colourful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events.
Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector, and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history…
Meet the characters!
Miguel is a 12-year-old who struggles against his family’s generations-old ban on music. Forced to keep his passion a secret, he keeps a precious collection of records, posters and figurines celebrating his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, hidden in an attic away from prying eyes. When a magical mishap lands him in the Land of the Dead, he must enlist the help of his dead ancestors and loyal dog, Dante, to help him find his way back to the Land of the Living.
Dante is a Xolo dog – short for Xoloitzcuintli – the national dog of Mexico. Nearly hairless and missing some teeth, Dante has trouble keeping his tongue in his mouth! But his friendly nature and loyal spirit make him the perfect companion on Miguel’s unexpected adventure.
Hector – a charming trickster in the Land of the Dead – is desperate for a chance visit the Land of the Living and meet his family, but there’s a rule that prevents him from crossing over. Hector promises to help Miguel find his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz, and in return, Miguel agrees to take Hector’s photo back to his family. But their journey won’t be an easy one…
